Which degrees need the dMAT? The APS India affected-fields list explained.
The first question every Indian applicant asks about the dMAT is the simplest one: do I have to take it? The answer depends on three things — the field of your degree, the intake you are applying for, and the date your APS procedure started — and APS India has published the field part as a PDF. This guide explains how to read that list, what "affected field" means in practice, which applicants are handled differently, and what to do when your degree does not fit neatly into any box.
The three conditions — all of them
As announced by APS India, the dMAT requirement applies to you if all of the following are true:
- Field. Your degree is in one of the affected fields set out in the APS India affected-fields list (PDF).
- Intake. You are applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or a later one.
- Timing. Your APS procedure started on or after 29 June 2026.
Miss any one of them and, as the rules were announced, the requirement does not apply — though transitional cases exist for people caught between the old and new arrangements, and those are described on APS India's dMAT page. The timing condition is the one people get wrong most often: it refers to the date APS India recognises as the start of your procedure, not the day you began gathering documents.
The affected fields, as announced
The list, as announced, covers degrees in:
- Engineering — including computer science and IT;
- Commerce;
- Accounting;
- Finance;
- Economics;
- Business;
- Management.
Read that as two clusters. The first is the technical cluster — engineering in its many branches, with computer science and IT named explicitly. The second is the commerce-and-business cluster, which sweeps in the B.Com, BBA, economics and finance degrees that feed German business, economics and management master's programmes. Between them, these clusters cover a large share of Indian applicants to German master's degrees, which is precisely why the requirement was introduced where it was.
The PDF is the list; this page is a summary. The field names above are the announced headline categories. The official PDF may name sub-fields, degree titles or specialisations in more detail, and it can be revised. Open it, search for your own degree, and keep a copy of the version you read.
What "affected field" actually means
Three points of interpretation matter:
- It is read against your qualification. As announced, the list is applied to the degree APS is certifying — the Indian qualification you hold or are completing — rather than to the German programme you are applying for. Check the PDF's own wording on this point, and if your degree and your target programme sit in different fields, that combination is a question for APS India, not for a forum.
- Fields are broader than degree titles. "Engineering" is not a list of every B.E. and B.Tech branch; it is the field. Universities name degrees inconsistently, so look for the discipline your degree belongs to rather than an exact string match on its title.
- Ambiguity is resolved by APS India. The PDF is published by APS India, and APS India applies it. Where a degree could plausibly sit inside an affected field or outside one, the authority is the office that will process your file.

Not every route into a German master's is a standard individual application. APS India has stated that applicants on exchange programmes, double-degree arrangements and formal university partnerships are handled differently from the general rule. Two cautions:
- "Handled differently" is not the same as "exempt". Read the exact wording for your route on APS India's page, and if your programme coordinator tells you something different, ask them to point to the source.
- Your programme has to actually be one of these. A university that happens to have a memorandum with your college does not make your individual application a partnership application. Confirm with both institutions, in writing, which route you are on before you rely on an exception.
How to read the official PDF
- Download it from APS India's site rather than relying on a screenshot someone shared — screenshots go stale.
- Find your degree's discipline as your university names it on your transcript or degree certificate. That is the name APS will see.
- Check whether the list names fields broadly or specifically, and read any notes or footnotes — the qualifying language is often where borderline cases are decided.
- If your degree is integrated (for example a five-year programme), dual, or interdisciplinary, note every field it spans; if any of them is on the list, treat yourself as potentially affected until told otherwise.
- Date your copy. If the list is later revised, you will want to know which version applied when your procedure started.
Borderline degrees: what to do
Some degree titles fall clearly inside the announced fields; others make people nervous. Mathematics with a computing minor. Statistics. Economics taught inside an arts faculty. BCA next to B.Tech in computer science. Integrated MBA programmes. Agricultural engineering. Architecture. We are not going to tell you which of these is in or out, because we would be guessing and you would be relying on the guess.
What we will tell you is the procedure. First, read the APS India FAQs, which address common categories. Second, if your case is not answered there, contact APS India through the route given on its site and ask directly, giving your exact degree title, university and faculty. Third, keep the reply. An email from APS India saying your degree is not affected is worth more than any amount of reasoning from a list.
While you wait for an answer, do not stop the clock. The first Indian cycle was announced with registration closing on 15 September 2026 and a test day of 26 September 2026 — as announced, and to be confirmed on the official dMAT India page. If there is a real chance you are affected, begin preparing as if you are; the cost of preparing unnecessarily is a few evenings, and the cost of not preparing is a semester.
If you are affected: what happens next
The dMAT becomes a step inside your APS certification. You register for a sitting through the process described by APS India and the official dMAT website, sit the fully digital test at a test centre — three 25-minute Core subtests in figure sequences, mathematical equations and Latin squares, plus the General Academic Module, around 165 minutes in all, with no calculators or notes and no penalty for guessing — and the result flows into your APS documentation. If you are not affected
Nothing changes for you today. Two habits are still worth keeping: check APS India's page again before you start your procedure, because lists of this kind are extended more often than they are shortened, and if you later change your target field or your intake, re-check the three conditions from the top.
