dMAT for Computer Science and Data Science master's: the university test vs the APS India test.
If you are applying for a master's in Computer Science or Data Science in Germany and you have seen "dMAT" in two different places — on a university's admission page and on APS India's site — you are not confused; there really are two uses of the same test. They are run by the same organisation, share the same name and the same format, but they sit at different points in your application and are required by different people. This guide separates them in plain words and tells you where to check which one, or both, applies to you.
One test provider, two roles
g.a.s.t. — the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung — is the body behind the digitaler Mastertest, or dMAT. Its official dMAT website is the authority on the test itself: what it contains, how it is sat, and where it is used. That last point is where the two roles diverge.
Role 1: the university-admission dMAT
For some years, g.a.s.t. has offered the dMAT as an admission test that certain German universities require for specific master's programmes. Computer Science and Data Science are the examples most often cited, because these are programmes with far more applicants than places and with a strong interest in measuring reasoning rather than grades alone. In this role, the dMAT is a programme requirement: the university decides whether it is needed, which applicants must take it, which part of the test counts and what result is expected.
We are deliberately not naming universities, programmes or score thresholds here, because those are set by each programme and change from year to year. The rule is simple: some universities, for some programmes — and the programme's own admission page, together with the official g.a.s.t. site at www.d-mat.de/en/, are the authorities. If your target programme's page says nothing about the dMAT, it is not required for that programme; if it does, the page will tell you the terms.
Role 2: the APS India dMAT
In 2026, the dMAT gained a second role for Indian applicants specifically. APS India — the office that issues the APS certificate Indian students need for German university applications and visas — introduced the dMAT as a step inside its certification for applicants in certain fields. This is a certification requirement, not a programme requirement. It is not tied to any single university; it applies before you have applied anywhere, as part of getting your APS certificate at all.
As announced, it applies to Indian applicants whose degree is in an affected field — engineering including computer science and IT, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business, management — applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later, with an APS procedure started on or after 29 June 2026. The details, including transitional cases and how exchange, double-degree and partnership applicants are treated, are on APS India's dMAT page, and g.a.s.t. describes the Indian arrangement on the official dMAT India page. We go through the field list in Which degrees need the dMAT?.
Side by side
- Who requires it. University dMAT: the individual programme. APS India dMAT: APS India, as part of certification.
- Who it applies to. University dMAT: applicants to that programme, of any nationality, on the programme's terms. APS India dMAT: Indian applicants in affected fields going through APS.
- When it sits in your timeline. University dMAT: as part of the application, on the programme's deadlines. APS India dMAT: at the APS stage, before your certificate is issued — and therefore before you apply.
- What it decides. University dMAT: whether and how you are ranked for admission. APS India dMAT: whether your APS certification can proceed.
- Where to check. University dMAT: the programme's admission page and the official g.a.s.t. site. APS India dMAT: APS India's dMAT page and the g.a.s.t. India page.

Yes, in principle. Take an Indian applicant with a B.Tech in computer science, starting APS after 29 June 2026 and applying for a Summer 2027 Data Science master's at a programme that lists the dMAT as an admission requirement. That person meets the APS India conditions and the programme's conditions. Whether one sitting can serve both purposes — whether a programme will accept a result obtained for APS, whether the same module is required, whether validity periods line up — is not something we can promise. It is a question for the programme and for g.a.s.t., and the honest answer today is: ask both, in writing, before you assume.
What we can say is that the preparation is identical. The format does not change with the reason you are sitting it.
The test itself, whichever role it plays
The dMAT is fully digital and sat at a test centre. It consists of three Core subtests — figure sequences, mathematical equations and Latin squares — each of 25 minutes, plus a General Academic Module, for roughly 165 minutes in total. No calculators or notes are permitted, and guessing is not penalised, so every item should be answered. Sample tasks for each section, a preparatory booklet for the General Academic Module and videos of the on-screen interface are published free on the official dMAT preparation page; we describe how to use them in our guide to the official materials.
For CS and Data Science applicants in particular, the reasoning-heavy Core subtests tend to feel familiar in kind — pattern recognition, symbolic manipulation, constraint satisfaction — and unfamiliar in speed. Twenty-five minutes per subtest is not long. The applicants who do well are not simply the ones who can solve a Latin square; they are the ones who can solve the twelfth one without thinking about how.
A four-step check for your own case
- Read your target programme's admission page — every programme, if you are applying to several. Note whether the dMAT is mentioned, and if so, exactly what it says about who must take it and what result is expected.
- Check the official g.a.s.t. site for the current description of where the university dMAT is used and how to register for it.
- Check APS India against the three conditions — field, intake, APS start date. If you are affected, the APS India sitting comes first in your timeline, whatever the programme says. The first Indian cycle was announced with registration closing on 15 September 2026 and a test day of 26 September 2026 — as announced; confirm both on the official India page before planning around them.
- If both apply, write to both. Ask the programme whether it accepts a result from the APS India sitting, and check the APS India FAQs — then their contact route — for whether anything about your programme route changes your APS case. Keep the answers.
The pattern to avoid. Do not let a programme page's silence convince you that you need no dMAT at all. The university test and the APS India test are independent: a programme that does not require the first has no bearing on whether APS India requires the second.

CS and Data Science applicants know the patterns; what wins is speed under a 25-minute clock. Practise it the way the test runs — on a screen, with a timer.
